Cost Effective Control Solution

This network is a state-of-the-art system designed for low cost automation and control. In its current form, it is designed as a cost effective solution for open field irrigation over medium to long distances. However, it has many other industrial automation applications.

The 2-wire network performs this task through a single 2-wire cable that facilitates both communications and power to remote units. Through this single cable, a total length of 10 km can be attained, with 128 units along the aforementioned length. A microPOLE single cable host unit controls the entire system.

Breadth and Depth

This system has many advantages over current cable orientated systems.

Its single, 2-wire cable is advanced, and due to its low cost, allows for higher levels of insulation and protection to be installed, by the virtue of more expensive cabling. This results in greater longevity and lower maintenance requirements.

Each Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) is capable of controlling 2 solenoid valves and connecting to two water meters, providing unprecedented low cost, long range, control. The individual RTUs have a host of other useful and advanced features that include:

• Built in differential Gas Discharge Tube (GDT)


• Auto valve shut down upon communications of power failure


• Each solenoid has an independent capacitor to minimise operating delay

The microPOLE single cable host unit also has other real world features that will increase the system's resistance to adverse conditions:

• Galvanic isolation to the 2-wire network


• Zero DC voltage across cable to minimise corrosion


• Built in, 2-stage, transient protection, with further enhancements possible using an external Series Lightning Protection Module (SLPM)

Furthermore, many farmers that employ cable networks understand the chaos that lightning can wreak upon such a system. The picoPOLE 2-wire network has the option of installing enhanced lightning protection modules, through a plug in board. If placed every several units along the chain, this has the ability to provide nearby units with significant lightning immunity, even in the event of lightning strike within 100 metres.

Customisable and Flexible

The 2-wire network is user-friendly technology that includes functions that make sense. For example, the network has a plug & use system that automatically discovers when new units are added.
